The Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) has disowned a viral X (formerly Twitter) account allegedly lobbying former presidential candidates Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to contest the 2027 election on its platform, insisting that the party is open to all Nigerians without preference.
In a statement issued late Sunday, April 26, and signed by the party’s national secretary, Barr. Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, the party, described the reports as false, attributing them to a “rogue” social media account impersonating its verified handle and spreading misleading information.
The NDC said the account, which mimics its official identity with similar colours and logo, does not represent its views or positions, stressing that it has no arrangement with any individual or group regarding electoral contests. “Please ignore any report, either in the traditional media or social media, claiming that the Nigerian Democratic Congress is lobbying any specific individual or group to contest the election on the platform of the party.
“This is contrary to insinuations made by a rogue X account parodying the verified handle of the NDC,” the statement read. The party noted that it had previously alerted Nigerians to the fake account and reiterated that its posts should not be taken as official communication.
While conceding that the account may be operated by an “enthusiastic supporter or any other person”, the NDC maintained that its content remains unauthorised. It urged journalists and the public to verify information through its verified X handle to avoid misinformation.
Reaffirming its inclusive stance, the party said it welcomes all Nigerians interested in political participation to join and contest elections under its platform.
“We invite every Nigerian desirous of positive change and every lover of multi-party democracy to join the NDC, work for the party and feel free to contest elections on its platform.
“This appeal is especially so for women and persons with disability. For the NDC is a party for all,” it stated. The party also expressed gratitude for the level of support it has received within a short period of its formation, describing itself as an ideological platform committed to national service.
