Glasgow, Scotland — Rangers defender Leon Balogun has expressed his readiness to continue representing Nigeria at the international level.
The 36-year-old has not featured for the Super Eagles since his appearance as a substitute during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sao Tome and Principe in June 2022. Despite his absence, Balogun emphasized his availability for national team duties.
Speaking with newsmen, Balogun clarified the reasons behind his extended absence. “It’s not that I declined an invitation. Before the World Cup break, I sustained an injury that should have healed in a few weeks, but recovery didn’t go as planned. After regaining fitness, I suffered a relapse,” he explained.
He continued, “Since then, I’ve stayed fit and available. I’ve never announced my retirement from international football, and those who need to know are aware of my willingness and ambition to play for the Super Eagles.”
Balogun, who has been in fine form for Rangers this season, has earned 46 caps for the national team, scoring one goal. He was a key member of the Super Eagles squad at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and contributed to the team’s third-place finish at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
