Abuja, Nigeria — Bilateral trade between Nigeria and China reached a remarkable $20 billion in 2024, marking a major achievement in the partnership between the two nations.
The announcement was made by Yu Dunhai, Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, during the 2025 Chinese Lunar New Year celebration held in Abuja.
Reflecting on the past year, Ambassador Yu described 2024 as a pivotal period for Nigeria-China relations, highlighted by the upgrade of their partnership to a comprehensive strategic alliance during President Bola Tinubu’s visit to China. He expressed optimism that 2025 would bring even greater opportunities for collaboration.
Ambassador Yu emphasized Nigeria’s significance in China’s African engagement strategy, noting that the country stands as China’s largest engineering contract hub, its second-largest export market, and its third-largest trading partner on the continent. He further stressed the role of cultural and interpersonal exchanges as vital components of the bilateral relationship.
Extending his Lunar New Year greetings, Ambassador Yu drew inspiration from the Year of the Snake, symbolizing resilience, intelligence, and prosperity. He expressed hope that these qualities would guide both nations toward peace and progress.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Oraeluno Raphael Obi, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy, highlighted the deep historical ties between Nigeria and China. He praised their mutual respect and shared goals, emphasizing the cultural richness of both nations as a foundation for strengthened cooperation in the areas of art, culture, and tourism.
Mr. Xu Zhen Tao, Deputy Director of Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism, commended the Belt and Road Initiative for its role in fostering stronger ties and promoting global stability.
Adding to the conversation, Professor Sheriff Ghali Ibrahim, Director of the Centre for Contemporary China-Africa Research, emphasized the importance of cultural integration in fostering mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence.
The Lunar New Year celebration, attended by more than 2,000 guests from both countries, featured an array of cultural performances, exhibitions, and culinary showcases. The event served as a vivid representation of the vibrant traditions that unite Nigeria and China.
