Ijebu-Jesa, Osun State – July 28, 2025

An operative of the Osun State Amotekun Corps, identified as Peter Samuel Tope, has died following an alleged unprovoked attack by a soldier in the Ijeda area of Ijebu-Jesa.

The tragic incident, which occurred around 5:45 p.m. on Saturday, was confirmed by the Commander of Osun Amotekun Corps, Isaac Omoyele, in a statement released on Sunday in Osogbo.

According to Omoyele, the soldier, a recent recruit of the Nigerian Army and dressed in military camouflage, reportedly approached the Amotekun station in Ijebu-Jesa in a hostile manner and made derogatory remarks about the security outfit.

“What followed was an unprovoked assault on one of our personnel, Officer Peter Tope, who was arriving on a motorcycle,” Omoyele stated. “They knocked him off the bike and hit him on the head with a hard object, leaving him severely injured and in a pool of blood for over 20 minutes.”

Tope was rushed to Wesley Guild Hospital in Ilesa but succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of Sunday. A second Amotekun officer who was also attacked is currently receiving treatment.

The suspects, including the alleged soldier, reportedly fled the scene on commercial motorcycles. Omoyele has called for a thorough investigation into the matter and vowed that the corps would pursue justice for their fallen colleague.

The Osun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the incident, revealing that the prime suspect is an Army Private.

“The Amotekun commander in Ijebu-Jesa reported that the suspect used a jack-knife to stab two Amotekun officials,” Ojelabi said. “We are actively working to apprehend him and have his details.” It was reported that the incident was later reported to the Nigerian Police for further investigation.
