The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has clarified why it withheld the discharge certificate of Rita Uguamaye, the corps member who recently went viral after criticising President Bola Tinubu over the state of the nation and delayed allowance payments. In a statement, the NYSC described claims that she was punished for her comments as “entirely unfounded and false.”
According to the management, Uguamaye’s service year was extended by two months for failing to attend the April 2025 biometric clearance, a violation of NYSC Bye-Laws. The agency noted that she is among 131 corps members facing similar sanctions, stressing that the action was a standard disciplinary measure applied equally to all defaulters.
The NYSC urged the public not to politicise the matter, explaining that service extensions for non-compliance have been a long-standing tradition in the scheme. It reaffirmed its commitment to upholding its mandate in line with the constitution, adding, “Nigeria is Ours; Nigeria We Serve.”
