Akpabio returns from London, dismisses ill health speculations

Senate President Godswill Akpabio returned to Abuja early Monday after a brief vacation in London, a move seen as putting to rest swirling rumours that he was critically ill and hospitalised abroad.

Akpabio, who had led a Nigerian delegation to the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva between July 29 and 31, proceeded to London afterward, sparking whispers about his health and capacity to lead the upper chamber.

Touching down at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport at 4:00 a.m., the Senate President was received at the Presidential Wing by senators, aides, and supporters in what observers described as a show of political solidarity.

Fielding questions, Akpabio promised Nigerians “robust legislative engagements” when the National Assembly resumes and defended the size of Nigeria’s delegation to Geneva, stressing it was necessary for strengthening democratic governance and reinforcing ties with other arms of government.
