The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics has raised fresh concerns over the government’s failure to settle outstanding promotion arrears owed to workers in the sector.
Speaking during the union’s 78th General Executive Council meeting in Abuja, National President Philip Ogunsipe said workers are being pushed to the edge by prolonged financial delays, worsening insecurity, and harsh economic conditions.
Ogunsipe criticised what he described as repeated unfulfilled promises by government officials regarding the release of the new Schemes and Conditions of Service for polytechnics and the long-delayed renegotiation of the 2010 Agreement. He also lamented the non-release of the 2023 NEEDS Assessment Funds allocated for infrastructure upgrades.
The SSANIP president further faulted the National Board for Technical Education for submitting the reviewed Schemes of Service directly to the Ministry of Education without labour consultation — a move he labelled a breach of trust and due process.
He appealed to President Bola Tinubu to prioritise the issues affecting non-academic polytechnic staff, warning that failure to act could lead to industrial action.
