Tax Reform: Adedeji Warns Against Protests, Urges Security Agencies to Stay Alert

1 min read

Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service, Zacch Adedeji, has called on security agencies to be on alert over rumours of planned protests against the newly introduced tax laws, cautioning Nigerians against misinformation surrounding the reforms.

Speaking on Sunday during an interview on Arise Television, Adedeji urged citizens to carefully study the tax laws and understand how the provisions affect them, rather than relying on rumours or calls for mass action. He stressed that laws passed by the National Assembly cannot be suspended by individuals or pressure groups, describing such calls as unconstitutional.

The NRS chairman said the tax reform bills went through extensive consultations, including over six months of public hearings, and insisted that while amendments could be made where necessary, implementation had already commenced. He added that the reforms were designed to protect the poor, alleging that opposition to the policy was being driven by unpatriotic elements seeking to undermine its benefits.
