Benue: Six bodies recovered as police intensify manhunt after gunmen attack

Benue State Police Command has intensified security operations following a deadly attack on farmers in Apa Local Government Area, where six bodies have so far been recovered.

In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, the command said the attack occurred in the early hours of March 13, 2026, when suspected armed herders stormed cashew farms in Asaba, Ojantele, and Okpette communities while farmers were working on their plantations.

According to the police, a joint security response team comprising Nigeria Police Force operatives, military personnel, and local youths quickly moved into nearby forests to launch search-and-rescue operations to locate victims and track the attackers.

The statement revealed that six lifeless bodies were discovered during the initial operation. At the same time, security agencies have continued efforts to secure the communities and locate other victims who may still be missing.

The Commissioner of Police, Ifeanyi Emenari, assured residents that additional security personnel have been deployed to strengthen ongoing operations and ensure a more coordinated manhunt for those responsible for the killings.

Meanwhile, security patrols have been intensified across the affected communities and other parts of the state to prevent further violence and reassure residents of the commitment of security agencies to protect lives and property.

The police also appealed to members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information that could assist ongoing operations.
