Labour Party sets dates for 2027 presidential primary, others amid internal shake-up

The Labour Party has scheduled its presidential primary election for May 23 as part of preparations for the 2027 general elections.

This was disclosed on Wednesday, March 18, in Abuja by the party’s Senior Special Adviser (Media) to the Interim National Chairman, Ken Asogwa.

According to him, the date forms part of the party’s approved timetable for its primaries. Asogwa explained that the timetable was finalised during a statutory National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, which was monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He added that, in line with the Electoral Act and INEC guidelines, April 15 has been set as the deadline for submitting the party’s membership register to the electoral body.

The party will also conduct its governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and House of Assembly primaries on May 15. Meanwhile, ward, local government, and state congresses are scheduled to take place on March 26, March 28, and March 31, respectively, and decisions that were ratified by the NEC.

The national convention is slated for April 11.

Speaking further, Asogwa said, “The council, which remains the highest decision-making organ of the party after the national convention, reviewed recent developments within the party.
