The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, has warned that it may embark on an indefinite nationwide strike if the Federal Government fails to conclude the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement by the end of April 2026.
The union issued the warning in a communiqué released on Sunday in Abuja following its 54th National Executive Council, NEC, meeting held at Ekiti State University.
The statement was signed by SSANU’s National President, Muhammad Ibrahim. SSANU expressed dissatisfaction with what it described as the slow pace and lack of clarity surrounding the ongoing renegotiation process with non-teaching unions, citing the absence of firm timelines and concrete commitments from the government.
The union urged the Federal Government to urgently reconvene discussions and conclude the process in a manner that is transparent, fair, and time-bound.
“In view of this, SSANU hereby issues a final ultimatum to the Federal Government from April 1 to April 30, 2026, to conclude the renegotiation process and sign the agreement,” Ibrahim said.
He added that failure to meet the deadline would leave the union with no alternative but to collaborate with its counterpart under the Joint Action Committee, JAC, comprising the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions and SSANU, to embark on an indefinite industrial action across universities.
The union also decried persistent delays in salary payments and the non-implementation of wage increments, noting that the situation has intensified economic hardship among its members.
SSANU further called for the immediate settlement of all outstanding salaries and advocated the adoption of a unified salary payment system, recommending the use of Remita to ensure efficiency and transparency.
