The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has demanded the arrest and prosecution of persons involved in the assault of a doctor at the Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH), Oghara, during a protest by members of the host community.
The incident reportedly happened on Tuesday after protesters barricaded the hospital gate over grievances relating to staff employment.
“This act is barbaric, unjustifiable, and a direct affront to the dignity and safety of healthcare professionals who dedicate their lives to saving others. No doctor should be subjected to such violence under any circumstances.”
The association called for “an immediate and thorough investigation” into the incident to ensure the “identification, arrest, and prosecution of all perpetrators involved.” Following the attack, the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), DELSUTH Oghara, commenced an industrial action, a move NARD said it fully supports until its demands are met.
NARD warned against any intimidation of doctors participating in the strike.
“The safety of healthcare workers is non-negotiable. Any attempt to intimidate or victimise members participating in this lawful strike will be met with an appropriate response,” the association said.
