A large number of serving senators yesterday secured tickets to contest for seats in the 11th Senate. Some sitting governors were also elected during the shadow polls conducted across the 109 districts.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) – the ruling party at the federal level with control of 31 states – held the second stage of its primaries to pick candidates for next year’s elections yesterday.
Although the results await ratification by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party, provisional results showed that governors and other bigwigs secured tickets for next year’s elections in their districts.
Governors AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq (Kwara), Hope Uzodimma (Imo), Mai Mala Buni (Yobe), Inuwa Yahaya (Gombe), Umar Fintiri (Adamawa), and Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), all outgoing governors, won tickets to the Senate.
In some keenly contested districts, Okowa defeated serving Senator Ned Nwoko.
Senator Ede Dafinone (Delta Central) also outclassed former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege. Senate President Godswill Akpabio and the two other senators from Akwa Ibom State all secured return tickets.
Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin was returned unopposed in Kano North. Senator Kawu Sumaila won in Kano South.
Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele (Ekiti Central) and his colleagues – Cyril Fasuyi (Ekiti North) and Yemi Adaramodu (Ekiti South) – all secured tickets. All three senators from Lagos – Adetokunbo Abiru (Lagos East), Wasiu Eshilokun-Sanni (Lagos Central), and Dr. Idiat Adebule (Lagos West) – also secured their tickets.
Senator Adams Oshiomhole returned unopposed for Edo North, while Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama defeated Ize-Iyamu. Orji Kalu (Abia North), Sunday Karimi (Kogi West), and Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central) also secured tickets.
Mrs Oyedele-Salako lost to Jimoh Ojugbele, a former member of the Ogun State House of Assembly Commission. According to the APC national leadership, 47 aspirants, including Senator Ben Murray-Bruce, former presidential aspirant Jack-Rich, and Kolapo Kola-Daisi, son-in-law of former Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi, were disqualified from the race.
