ADC demands arrest of Kuje chairman over alleged citizens’ threat

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of Kuje Area Council Chairman, Samuel Danjuma Shekwolo, over his alleged directive that residents must support the All Progressives Congress (APC) or leave the area.

The party described the alleged statement as a threat to citizens’ rights and a sign of growing political intimidation ahead of the 2027 general election.

In a statement yesterday, ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate and prosecute Shekwolo rather than merely invite him for questioning.

The party argued that tying residents’ right to live in Kuje to their political affiliation amounted to forced displacement and violated constitutional protections. It cited Sections 40, 41 and 42 of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantee freedom of association, residence and protection from discrimination based on political opinion.

The ADC questioned the basis of the alleged threat, noting that Shekwolo was elected with 17,269 votes, against 15,824 for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate and 4,305 for the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate. It said the chairman had a responsibility to protect all residents, regardless of how they voted.

The party linked the Kuje incident to a broader pattern of alleged political threats, citing comments attributed to Senator Francis Fadahunsi, who represents Osun East Senatorial District, during the Osun governorship election.

The ADC appealed to the National Peace Committee to address threats and inflammatory statements before they escalated into violence during elections, and to engage political actors on compliance with peaceful election commitments.

Among its demands, the party called for the arrest and prosecution of Shekwolo; the reopening and prosecution of the Fadahunsi case; preservation of video, audio and documentary evidence relating to both incidents, and disciplinary action against Shekwolo by the APC.

It also called on domestic and international election observers to flag the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Osun State as early-warning areas ahead of 2027.
