Ado-Ekiti, Nigeria — The founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), Aare Afe Babalola, has formally dropped all criminal charges against human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi, following the intervention of Yoruba traditional rulers, including the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi.
The announcement, made on Sunday, underscores Babalola’s deep respect for Yoruba cultural institutions and their role in conflict resolution.
The legal dispute arose after Farotimi, in his book Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System, accused Aare Babalola of judicial influence, prompting legal action from the renowned legal practitioner.
However, in a press briefing, Babalola acknowledged the role of Yoruba traditional leaders in mediating the situation, emphasizing the authority of their intervention.
Respect for Yoruba Tradition
“The word of an Oba in Yoruba tradition is a command,” Babalola remarked, highlighting his deference to the esteemed Yoruba royal heritage.
The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, lauded Aare Babalola’s immense contributions to the Yoruba race, Nigeria, and the global community.
“We engaged Aare Babalola on the matter, and he demonstrated respect for our collective decision as traditional leaders,” the Ooni stated.
He further commended Babalola for his integrity and unwavering dedication to preserving his legacy.
“Aare Afe Babalola has worked tirelessly to build an impeccable reputation, and it must not be tarnished or undermined by anyone. His actions reflect his commitment to cherishing his name and his contributions to society,” the Ooni concluded.
