Allegations Surface Against Osun Amotekun Commander for Past Unlawful Detentions. Dayo Fashola, a concerned citizen, has publicly accused the current Commander of the Osun State Amotekun Corps of a pattern of unlawful detentions and disregard for legal procedures during his previous service in the Nigeria Police Force.
In a Facebook post, Fashola recounted a troubling experience she had in 2022 involving the then-CSP Omoyele, now Commander of Amotekun. According to her:
“Omoyele did not start today.
In the lead-up to the Osun General Elections of 2022, the then Omoyele, who was said to be a CSP with Osun State Police Command, had arrested several APC members in their homes, while some were abducted from their hotel rooms.” She explained that the individuals were unlawfully detained without charges and held incommunicado:
“The men in this picture, which was taken at Omoyele’s outpost, were arrested and illegally detained for days by CSP Omoyele before a friend reached out to me to share their predicament. They were held incommunicado until one of the police officers under Omoyele, who was appalled by his conduct, decided to help them with a small phone to quickly call their family and share their location.”
Fashola described how she became involved in securing their release:
“Omoyele arrested these men, seized their phones, and jailed them such that they were unreachable until Sunday, July 17th, 2022, after which they managed to call Ladi Balogun, who then called me immediately as the SSA Protocols to the Governor.” Despite her official capacity, she claimed her efforts to secure the men’s release were met with resistance:
“I was almost detained too when I went to secure their release; calls from our SA on Security could not resolve the malaise, as Omoyele simply stood his ground, refusing to release them.”
Eventually, the matter escalated to higher authorities: “I had to put a call to DIG Kokumo, who then summoned him, myself, and the seven innocent men to the SIB headquarters in Osogbo. DIG Kokumo apologized profusely on behalf of the Nigeria Police Force and pleaded with the seven men to please not press charges for the violation of their fundamental human rights.”
Fashola concluded her account by emphasizing the psychological impact the incident had on the detainees: “By the time we secured their release, they were so traumatized and totally disillusioned by the experience.”
These allegations emerge amid renewed scrutiny of the Amotekun Commander following the recent arrest of influencer Taiwo Olaore, who alleges that he, too, was detained without due process. Olaore also claimed to have seen other individuals in Amotekun custody being held without charge or access to legal support.
The Osun State Government and Amotekun leadership have yet to respond publicly to the allegations.
