Alumni, Students Reject Renaming of UNIMAID as Buhari University

1 min read

There is growing opposition to the Federal Government’s decision to rename the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) as Muhammadu Buhari University.

Alumni, students, and concerned citizens have urged President Tinubu to halt the move, arguing it undermines the university’s 40-year legacy. In a widely circulated petition, they suggested alternative institutions in Buhari’s hometown or with military ties would be more appropriate to bear his name. The petition has gained strong support, with over 1,500 new signatories as of Friday.

A petition with thousands of signatures is urging President Tinubu to reverse the move and consider alternative institutions more suited to Buhari’s background.
