ATBU Student Invents Smart Glove That Converts Sign Language to Speech. Innovation is alive at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, where a brilliant student, Muhammad Habib Husaini, from the Department of Computer and Communication Engineering, has developed a groundbreaking device that could transform how people with speech impairments communicate.
Habib invented the NHED Smart Glove, a homemade, speech-transforming device that converts sign language into audio output. Using pressure sensors embedded in the glove, signals are transmitted to an ESP32 microcontroller, which then communicates with an SD card module to trigger the corresponding spoken words.
This glove, entirely built from scratch using locally sourced components, stands out as a low-cost but highly effective solution for those who rely on sign language to express themselves.
Habib explained his mission clearly: “With the NHED Smart Glove, we are not just building a device; we are restoring dignity and bridging gaps in communication.” His invention is a powerful step toward inclusion, accessibility, and empowerment, especially for the speech-impaired community.
