Dortmund, Germany — Borussia Dortmund have officially parted ways with head coach Nuri Şahin following their 2-1 defeat to Bologna in Tuesday’s Champions League clash.
The loss marked Dortmund’s fourth consecutive defeat across all competitions, a disappointing streak for a club that reached the Champions League final last season.
Şahin, who served as assistant to former Dortmund coach Edin Terzić during last season’s remarkable run to the Champions League final, was promoted to head coach over the summer. However, his time at the helm was marked by inconsistency.
Under Şahin’s leadership, Dortmund managed only six wins in 19 games and currently sit 10th in the Bundesliga standings, trailing the final Champions League qualification spot by seven points.
Sporting Director’s Statement
In a statement, Dortmund’s sporting director, Lars Ricken, expressed regret over the decision but cited the club’s poor form as the driving factor.
“We value Nuri Şahin and his contributions greatly. We had hoped for a long-term partnership and believed in his ability to lead the team,” Ricken said. “However, after four consecutive defeats and just one win in our last nine games, we have lost confidence in our ability to meet our sporting goals under the current circumstances.”
Ricken added that the decision to part ways with Şahin was “painful but necessary” following the latest setback in Bologna.
With the club struggling to recover from their poor start to the season, Dortmund will now look to appoint a new manager capable of reigniting their campaign and restoring their competitive edge.
