Brussels, Belgium — Former Belgian international footballer Radja Nainggolan has been arrested in connection with an ongoing investigation into cocaine trafficking.
Authorities confirmed the arrest of the 36-year-old midfielder on Monday morning, alongside several other suspects, following coordinated police raids across Belgium.
According to a statement from the Brussels prosecutor’s office, the investigation centers on the alleged importation of cocaine from South America to Europe through Antwerp, one of the continent’s busiest ports, and its subsequent distribution across Belgium.
“This arrest is part of a larger probe into drug trafficking operations utilizing Antwerp’s port,” the statement read.
Nainggolan’s arrest comes just days after his return to professional football. The former international recently joined Lokeren, a Belgian second-division team, ending his brief retirement. He made an immediate impact on his debut, scoring in a 1-1 draw against K. Lierse.
Born in Antwerp, Nainggolan gained fame for his stellar performances in Italy, where he played for renowned clubs such as Roma and Inter Milan. He represented Belgium on the international stage, earning 30 caps between 2009 and 2018.
The arrest of the high-profile athlete has drawn significant attention as Belgian authorities intensify efforts to combat drug trafficking through Antwerp’s port.
