Ibadan, Nigeria — The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged Governor Seyi Makinde to reconsider the continued conversion of agricultural lands into housing estates, citing fears of worsening hunger and food insecurity in the state.
In a statement issued Sunday in Ibadan by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Mr. Olawale Sadare, the APC criticized the administration’s approach to land use, particularly in Akinyele and Ido local government areas where estate developers allegedly demolished tree crops cultivated by local farmers.
Sadare accused the Makinde-led government of prioritizing commercial interests over food sustainability, warning that the loss of viable farmlands threatens the livelihoods of farmers and disrupts the state’s agricultural ecosystem.
He also alleged that lands belonging to private citizens and families are being taken by the government under the guise of serving the public interest, a move he said has drawn widespread backlash.
The APC called on the state government to adopt policies that balance urban development with the protection of food sources, emphasizing that preserving farmlands is essential to securing the state’s food future.
The party concluded by urging Governor Makinde to listen to public outcry and adopt a more sustainable, people-centered approach to development.
