The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have accused the federal government of betrayal and threatened to go on strike by September 22 if their demands are not met.

The warning was contained in a 7-day ultimatum, which started on September 15, as issued by the two unions through their Joint Action Committee (JAC).

They submitted that the government has failed to fulfil its promise to look into their grievances, as agreed in an earlier meeting held with the Minister of Education.

The unions, in a letter addressed to the Minister of Education, titled “Re: Call for urgent intervention in outstanding labour matters affecting NASU and SSANU members in the Universities and Inter-University centres,” accused the minister of treating non-teaching staff unions with levity.

Some of their grievances include the non-renegotiation of the 2009 Agreements, the exclusion of the inter-university centres in the disbursement of the ₦50 billion earned allowances, and the non-payment of the two months’ withheld salaries. The JAC threatened to shut down public universities on September 22 if their demands were not addressed.

The letter, dated September 12, 2025, was signed by NASU General Secretary, Prince Peters A. Adeyemi, and SSANU President, Comrade Mohammed Haruna Ibrahim.
