The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Disu Olatunji Rilwan, has read the riot act to officers and men of the Nigerian Police over the misuse of firearms in the course of discharging their duties.
He also urged them to ensure strict compliance with police professional ethics and decorum in their engagements with the civilian populace.
IGP Disu issued the warning during the passing-out parade of 100 trainees from the Anambra Police Command to mark the end of a two-week Combat and Arms Drill Training at Oji River Police College, held on Wednesday in Enugu State.
He noted that the primary assignment of all officers and men of the force is to protect law-abiding citizens of the country at all times.
Represented by the Commandant of the College, Deputy Inspector-General of Police, DIG Bretet Emmanuel Simon, he challenged the officers and trainees to “exhibit a high level of professionalism and tact.”
According to the IGP, “My charge to the trainees is that as you pass out today, I sincerely congratulate you and equally challenge all of you to exhibit high level of professionalism and tact, by making use of the tactical knowledge imparted to you to combat crimes and ensure that crime is reduced to its barest level within your area of coverage.”
DIG Bretet said, “The Inspector-General of Police, Disu Olatunji Rilwan, is solidly behind you to ensure all necessary support is given as you go out there to perform your duty professionally, devoid of human rights violations, and the IGP will not tolerate any form of misuse of firearms or accidental discharge.”
The Special Adviser to Governor Charles Soludo on Security, Air Vice Marshal Ben Chiobi (rtd), who represented the governor, disclosed that the Anambra State Government sponsored the training programme in furtherance of its continuous battle against insecurity and other forms of criminality in Anambra State.
He explained that the support given to the Police Command is being replicated by other sister security organisations, stressing that Governor Charles Soludo sees the security of lives and property as his first line of charge in making Anambra State a prosperous and healthy smart city state.
