A senior Nigerian government source has confirmed that former President Goodluck Jonathan is safe in Guinea-Bissau following the recent military takeover in the country. According to the official, who spoke anonymously on Thursday, arrangements are already being made to facilitate his return to Nigeria.
The source revealed that a multinational task force, including Nigerian operatives, is currently deployed in Guinea-Bissau to ensure the protection of Jonathan and other Nigerian officials stranded in the country. The official added that Nigeria is taking all necessary steps to guarantee their safety and coordinate evacuation plans.
Jonathan travelled to Guinea-Bissau as part of a 36-member team of high-level election observers under the African Union, ECOWAS and the West African Elders Forum, ahead of last Sunday’s presidential election. His situation comes as the Federal Government strongly condemned the coup and demanded an immediate return to constitutional rule.
