The 2023 presidential candidates of the Labour Party (LP) and the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have both formally joined the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC).
The duo joined the party on Sunday night at a welcome event at the Abuja home of Bayelsa State’s former governor, Seriake Dickson.
They arrived at about 5 p.m. and held discussions with Dickson and other NDC leaders, including the National Chairman, Senator Cleopas Moses Zuwoghe.
They later went into a closed-door session and ended just before 7 p.m.
Speaking after the meeting, Senator Dickson described them as “very suitable suitors.”
Kwankwaso called on Nigerians to rally behind the NDC.
“I would like to invite all Nigerians, especially those who are interested in contesting for elections in this party, to register as soon as possible,” said Kwankwaso, after confirming that the party will submit its register on May 6.
Obi, on his part, praised his and Kwankwaso’s antecedents, investing in education and people, when they were governors of Anambra and Kano, respectively.
He promised that they would do more if elected to national public offices.
“We are coming to build a united, secure, prosperous Nigeria that will work for everybody,” Obi said.
Obi and Kwankwaso were later presented with their membership cards.
The two are expected to run as the NDC’s presidential and vice-presidential candidates in the 2027 General Election.
