The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has successfully dismantled an illegal alcohol packaging facility located at Article Market in Abule-Osun, Lagos State. In an operation on Thursday, the agency seized over 50,000 counterfeit labels and packaging materials for fake alcoholic beverages, estimated to be worth ₦2 billion.
NAFDAC confirmed that these items were being used to produce unapproved, hazardous alcohol, which poses serious health risks, including poisoning and organ damage. The agency has urged consumers to only buy alcoholic products from verified vendors and to report any suspicious activities to NAFDAC offices.
In a separate raid in Lagos’ Oke-Afa area, NAFDAC uncovered a warehouse storing unregistered and expired supermarket items. Acting on intelligence, a team raided the facility where operators were offloading a 20ft container filled with unregistered carbonated drinks. Further inspection revealed over 14 rooms filled with expired products, some of which were contaminated by rats.
The warehouse has been temporarily closed, and operations are on hold pending further investigation. NAFDAC has requested the management to provide evidence of proper sourcing, including the necessary Global Listing for Supermarket Items (GLSI) certification.
As the holiday season approaches, NAFDAC has issued a warning about the dangers of unregulated products and urged consumers to stay vigilant, verify product sources, and report suspicious activities to the agency.
