NATCOMS Rejects NCC’s 50% Tariff Increase

Abuja, Nigeria —   The National Association of Telecoms Subscribers (NATCOMS) has firmly opposed the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC) decision to approve a 50% tariff hike for telecom operators.

The approval was announced on Monday following requests by the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) and the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) for a tariff review.

Speaking on the development, NATCOMS President, Deolu Ogunbanjo, criticized the NCC’s decision, describing it as unfair and burdensome to subscribers.

“It is an overwhelming burden for subscribers,” Ogunbanjo remarked. “We are already contending with rising costs of fuel, electricity, and other essential services. Now, telcos demand 100%, and the NCC grants 50%. It’s unacceptable.”

NATCOMS argued that the tariff hike is unjustifiable, especially amidst the economic challenges facing Nigerians. Ogunbanjo reaffirmed the Association’s commitment to opposing the increase, adding that subscribers are prepared to pursue legal action against the NCC.

Telecom operators had initially sought a 100% tariff increase, citing surging operational costs and price hikes in related sectors like aviation and power.

The operators also pointed out that telecom tariffs have remained unchanged for over a decade, a situation they claim threatens the sustainability and quality of service delivery in the industry.

The statement concluded with NATCOMS reiterating its resolve to safeguard the interests of telecom subscribers and ensure that policies in the sector reflect the economic realities of the Nigerian populace.
