Nigerian Army Confirms Explosion At Ilese Barracks In Ogun State

The Nigerian Army has confirmed that a minor explosion and subsequent fire outbreak occurred at Ilese Barracks, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, in the early hours of Thursday.

According to the Nigerian Army, the incident occurred within a storage building of the 42nd Engineers Brigade Counter-Improvised Explosive Device Squadron. The military said the “swift intervention by troops and the Ijebu-Ode Fire Service ensured that the fire was quickly contained.”

“No lives were lost, and no injuries were sustained,” said Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, the Acting Director, Army Public Relations.

The Nigerian Army said it has commenced a thorough investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the incident and to prevent a recurrence.

“The Nigerian Army remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all its personnel as well as the members of neighbouring communities,” Anele added. Residents of Ilese and adjoining communities have been urged to remain calm and go about their normal activities.

A detailed assessment is currently underway to determine the extent of material loss. “The incident has been contained, and the Nigerian Army is working to prevent any future occurrences.”

As the investigation continued, the army said it prioritised the safety and security of its personnel and the surrounding communities.
