Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has appointed his nephew, the Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, as the Chairman of the Osun Sports Trust Fund.
The announcement was made by the Deputy Governor and Commissioner for Sports, Kola Adewusi, during a courtesy visit by the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Osun State chapter, to his office.
Adewusi explained that the initiative is part of the state government’s renewed effort under Governor Ademola Adeleke to reposition sports in Osun and create a sustainable funding model through private and public sector partnerships.
“We are in advanced stages towards the establishment of the Osun State Sports Commission, which will serve as a central body for sports administration, development, and policy implementation,” Adewusi said.
“The introduction of a Sports Trust Fund will attract support from sports philanthropists within and outside the state, ensuring sustainable sports financing and development.”
The Deputy Governor revealed that Davido accepted the appointment without hesitation, expressing confidence that the music icon’s global influence and network would help attract substantial funding and visibility to Osun’s sports ecosystem.
Adewusi also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to completing the renovation of the Osogbo Township Stadium, which he said will meet Olympic standards once completed.
“The ongoing renovation and rehabilitation of the Osogbo Township Stadium will be completed in the shortest possible time. The project aims to transform the facility into a world-class arena capable of hosting national and international events,” he assured.
He emphasized that with Davido’s leadership at the helm of the Sports Trust Fund, Osun State is poised to witness a new era of sports excellence and infrastructure transformation.
This appointment has sparked multiple reactions among netizens, especially the people of Osun state, as Gov Adeleke continues to appoint family members in strategic positions.
Recall the governor had earlier appointed another nephew, Tunji Adeleke, son of former governor Isiaka Adeleke, as the Chairman board of local government in 2023.
