Senate Hosts North Central Security Summit in Plateau as Region Records Over 12,000 Deaths in a Decade

The Senate on Thursday gathered key stakeholders in Jos, Plateau State, for a high-level security summit aimed at tackling the escalating violence across the North Central region.

The zone — which covers Plateau, Niger, Kwara, Kogi, Benue, and Nasarawa — has witnessed widespread attacks in recent years, including over 420 recorded assaults and more than 12,000 deaths in Plateau State alone within the last decade.

Senator Abba Moro, who led the Senate delegation, stressed that security must be approached as a collective responsibility rather than a task left solely to government forces.

“National security is a shared responsibility. It does not rest solely on the military or security agencies,” he said, while noting that insurgency, banditry, militancy, and kidnapping have severely undermined peace and development across the region.

The summit drew traditional rulers, youth groups, academics, security experts, and civil society leaders. Participants are expected to issue recommendations aimed at restoring stability and preventing further attacks across vulnerable communities in the North Central.
