President Bola Tinubu has extended his condolences to the family of Justice Emmanuel Obioma Ogwuegbu, a former Supreme Court Justice, and to Nigeria’s judiciary, upon the passing of the distinguished jurist. In a statement issued through his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu shared his sympathies with members of the legal community who mourn Justice Ogwuegbu, describing him as a mentor to generations of judges and lawyers.
Born in 1933 in Amainyi, Ihitte-Uboma, Imo State, Justice Ogwuegbu dedicated over five decades to Nigeria’s judiciary, rising to the nation’s highest court. He played significant roles in shaping Nigerian law and served as president of the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies. Following Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999, he chaired the Judicial Commission of Inquiry investigating human rights abuses under military rule, a role that underscored his lifelong commitment to justice and accountability.
In his tribute, President Tinubu praised Justice Ogwuegbu for his dedication to the rule of law and his role in transforming Nigeria’s judiciary. Tinubu noted that Ogwuegbu championed integrity, discipline, and excellence, setting high standards for future generations in the legal profession. His influence extended beyond the bench, where he was deeply respected as a scholar and mentor whose impact reached across Nigeria’s legal community.
President Tinubu further highlighted Justice Ogwuegbu’s landmark rulings, particularly those addressing federalism, university autonomy, individual rights under the Nigerian Constitution, banking regulations, and monetary policy. Tinubu acknowledged that these judgments have become foundational references within Nigerian law and serve as guiding principles that continue to shape the nation’s legal landscape.
Reflecting on Justice Ogwuegbu’s legacy, Tinubu emphasized that his contributions have left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s judicial system and society. The president offered prayers for comfort to Ogwuegbu’s family and eternal peace for the late justice’s soul, recognizing his distinguished career and unwavering dedication to justice and equity.
