A former governor of Kano State, Ibrahim Shekarau, has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In a resignation letter dated April 19, 2026, and addressed to the PDP Chairman of Giginyu Ward in Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, Shekarau announced that his exit takes immediate effect.
“Accept this letter please as notice of my resignation from my position as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with effect from today,” he wrote.
The former minister said the decision followed extensive consultations within his political group, adding that it was taken ahead of a planned move to another political party.
“This decision follows wide and extensive deliberations within my political group to pursue our political career in a different political party,” Shekarau stated.
He expressed appreciation to party leadership at the ward level, adding, “I thank you for being a good leader, and pray that Allah will continue to guide you in your stewardship,” he added.
Shekarau served as Kano governor from 2003 to 2011 under the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP). In 2014, he joined the PDP after his former party, ANPP, merged to become the APC. In 2018, Shekarau resigned from the PDP to join the APC.
In May 2022, the ex-governor left the APC for the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) after months of leadership tussle with Abdullahi Ganduje, former governor of Kano.
