The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has fixed May 9, 2026, for its first national convention to be held in the nation’s capital city, Abuja. The party on Friday commenced its maiden congresses nationwide, marking a major step in its internal democratic process.

The programme of events across the country was disclosed in a statement by the NDC’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Abdulmumin Abdulsalam.

Abdulsalam, who confirmed that grassroots and mid-level congresses are already underway across the country, said that ward and polling unit congresses are scheduled for May 1 and 2, followed by local government and state congresses on May 4. Zonal congresses are expected to take place on May 6, setting the stage for the national convention three days later.

The statement noted that the phased approach is designed to ensure an orderly emergence of party structures from the grassroots to the national level, in line with its constitution and operational guidelines.

Abdulsalam, who noted that the party had concluded arrangements for the national convention, describing it as a significant milestone in the NDC’s institutional development, stressed that the convention would be held in Abuja and would bring together accredited delegates and party faithful, alongside officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, who are expected to monitor proceedings in compliance with provisions of the Electoral Act.

“On the back of the ongoing congresses, the NDC is also set for its maiden national party convention, which is scheduled to be held in Abuja on the 9th of May, 2026.

“The planning committee has concluded preparations for the convention. All is now set for the big event, which shall host accredited party faithfuls as well as the relevant INEC officials who are expected to monitor and observe the conduct of the Convention as mandated by the Electoral Act, he said.

He further stressed that logistics, security, and distribution of materials for the congresses and convention had been adequately addressed, assuring members of a seamless exercise nationwide.

The spokesman added that party officials at state and national levels have been mandated to strictly adhere to the approved timetable and guidelines to guarantee credibility throughout the process.

The NDC expressed confidence that the ongoing congresses would strengthen its internal democratic processes and position the party for broader political engagement ahead of future electoral activities.
